Get the Ultimate Festive Look - Decorate Your Home with Lisa Angel

By Stacy Curry - 20th November 2023

If you like to go all out at this time of year, decorating can be time-consuming and stressful, especially if you’re hosting the opening event of the season. Putting together a memorable family Christmas is no small task, but don’t worry - we’ve got you covered. This year, we’re giving you an easy how-to guide that makes turning your home into a festive dream as easy as making a wish (almost!).

Trimming Your Tree

A tree is the heart of your festive decor and choosing how to dress it is a hot debate each year in our families. Bold and colourful? Blue and white? Traditional or vintage? Everyone has their own unique taste when it comes to Christmas tree decorations and all of them are gorgeous but we understand that deciding how to trim your tree can be stressful. We’ve got some top tips and favourite products to help you curate a stylish and special tree for the centre of your family Christmas celebrations.

Use a warm white set of fairy lights to decorate your festive fir, and create a backdrop that enhances your special decorations rather than distracts from them. Be sure to remember to wrap those around your tree first, so you don’t get halfway through placing baubles and have to restart. If you prefer a larger tree, we recommend hanging your lights lengthways, starting from the bottom, going to the top and repeating. This is much simpler than trying to wrap them and is a fun way of doing something a little different. Plus, who can resist the cosy vibes warm white lighting gives off? It’s the perfect way to set the scene for a truly festive month all while providing the best blank canvas to arrange your baubles and garlands on.

Place your favourite Christmas tree decorations first! Choose your most loved baubles and make them the centrepieces of your tree. We recommend scattering them across the tree evenly and then filling the gaps in with any other decorations and fun extras you like to adorn your tree with. We love glass baubles for a more sturdy and stylish finish, or quirky beaded hanging decorations for a more vibrant theme. We recommend our festive animals, or our opulent classic baubles depending on your style - or if you favour a colourful Christmas design, then why not combine both and have fun just like we have?

Of course, the perfect way to complete any dressed tree is with presents underneath, but this year why not try a new tradition and surprise your loved ones with a gift the night before Christmas? Our range of beautiful, personalised wooden Christmas Eve boxes is the sweetest family tradition and can be reused for years to come. With a variety of styles available, you can choose one that they will adore and look forward to seeing every year. Tuck a sweet teddy inside, or maybe fill it with lots of smaller gifts and festive treats, either way, they’re sure to light up when they open their special Christmas Eve box

Laying Your Table

Sugar plum dried flower table decoration

Christmas dinner is a big deal, but who says your table can’t be part of your decor in the lead-up to the big day? Creating a little Christmas display will add to the cosy feel and also make you feel extra prepared for all the festivities heading your way. Centrepieces are the easiest way to bring some drama to the table (and we don’t mean the family kind) without having to do lots. Of course, you can use this as an excuse to get creative and start crafting, but this is an area where you can save time if you want to while leaving your family impressed. This year, our in-house team at The Norfolk Flower Room has created a stunning table decoration that will set the mood. The sugarplum centrepiece is a floral feature that can be reused over the year too, making it even more eco-friendly than fresh flowers. Including the LED taper candles to really make it pop, this arrangement is the dreamiest starting piece for your dining table.

Plus, elevating your table is a great way to show off some of your favourite, but maybe more delicate, homeware pieces for the season. Get out your best glassware and those special plates you never use and make them a feature this year! Our festive tables will be showing off our gold star tumblers, for an extra special touch to your Christmas drinks. Load it up with ice and fill, or simply set up an elegant place setting - either way, these glasses are the perfect way to get in the festive spirit. Place settings can also be a great way to use up excess Christmas tree decorations. Use tinsel to create a sparkling table runner or personalised baubles as name cards for each seat - don’t be afraid to get creative and make the most of what you have.

If, like many people, you don’t have a dining table then coffee or side table decoration is a must. Stock up on sweet festive mugs, like our smiling Santa Claus, and keep your morning hot drink on theme. Pair it with a plate of gingerbread cookies and minced pies and your cosy morning mood is just about perfect. Or display a selection of meaningful tokens for your guests to take and keep with them as a reminder of your festive well wishes. The little touches make all the difference when it comes to Christmas decorating.

Little Details

Even the smallest effort and the tiniest details can make a huge change when decorating your home, especially if you prefer a more subtle approach. Covering every surface with fairy lights isn’t for everyone (we love it though!), so why not simply add a few festive highlights to your home? If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace, then framing it with a fun garland is a great way to create a focal point in your living room. Draw attention to the wonderful spaces you already have and amplify the cosy vibes. Don’t forget to hang your stockings here, ready for Father Christmas to fill with gifts for you and your family. We recommend making them feel even more special with a personalised stocking and our velvet constellation style is sure to be adored.

If you don't have a fireplace, don’t worry we have plenty of other wonderful tips for you, including adorning your shelves with Christmas fun. A cute ornament or two is the perfect way to bring a little joy to the corners of your room. Our fuzzy reindeer ornament is sure to make everyone smile, or for a more elegant touch, try a collection of ceramic houses, with twinkling lights in the windows to create a mini village for your bookcase.

If you adore soft furnishings, then you can never go wrong with a seasonal cushion for your sofa or armchair. However, if you want to stand out from the crowd this year, then why not adorn your furniture with some super sweet festive Jellycat plushies? Perfect for if you have little ones, these cute teddies are a fun way to get festive. From velvet-soft reindeer to an adorable amuseable wreath, our Jellycat collection has something irresistible for everyone. Sit them in the centre of your sofa and snuggle up with them while you watch your favourite festive film or to create a talking point as well as a little seasonal fun. Either way, they’re sure to bring a little joy to anyone you welcome into your home.

Festive Statements

Whether you favour more traditional or modern decor, there are certain statement pieces that everyone adores. We know wreaths are a firm favourite, and they make a beautiful centrepiece. We offer a range of classically styled wreaths, made of beautiful dried florals that are perfect for the more eco-conscious decorator, as well as some quirkier choices - such as this reusable light-up wreath. Selecting the piece that suits your style is easy and, we have something to suit anyone. Simply order and hang it in your home with ease. Regardless of whether you choose to place them on your door or your wall, these fun pieces are a great way to easily make your space more Christmassy. Our favourite interior door wreath this year is The Norfolk Flower Room’s pink hydrangea dried flower wreath, for the perfect combination of traditional and modern styles. Plus, this wreath can last for up to twelve months, if it’s looked after correctly.

Garlands are another beautiful, traditional way to adorn your home. There are so many types available, that it's simple to find the perfect one for your theme. We adore these beautiful, handmade star buntings by Afroart, a fair trade company that supports traditional crafts and arts in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Drape them along shelves, atop picture frames or even around ornaments for an extra touch of festive flair. Or, for a tinsel alternative, wrap them around your tree for a more unique look to your Christmas tree decorations.

For the subtlest but most memorable statement, we recommend selecting a seasonal scent and using it throughout your home during December. Scatter candles, diffusers and maybe even use a perfume with notes of your festive aroma. Our favourite is this delicious gingerbread scent from The Candle Brand. Full of warming spice and sweetness, it will fill your home with an irresistible fragrance, and you will be reminded of your joyful family Christmas every time you smell gingerbread in the years after - as will your guests!

However you choose to decorate your home this season, we hope our tips and favourites will inspire you to create your cosiest, most beautiful Christmas yet, for you and your family. Shop our full festive range here.
